Using the Taskbar in Windows

You can personalize your taskbar in many ways—change its colors, pin your favorite apps, rearrange buttons, and even minimize all open programs to quickly view your desktop.

Pinning an App to the Taskbar

To pin (or unpin) an app for quick access:

  • In the search box on the taskbar, type the app name. Press and hold (or right-click) the app, then select Pin to taskbar.
  • If the app is already open, right-click or press and hold its icon on the taskbar, then select Pin to taskbar.

To unpin the app, select Unpin from taskbar.

Automatically Hiding the Taskbar

To hide the taskbar, right-click or press and hold any empty space on the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.

  • On Windows 10, turn on Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode or tablet mode (or both) in Taskbar settings.
  • On Windows 11, select Taskbar behaviors and then check the Automatically hide the taskbar box.

Using the Taskbar to Show the Desktop

To quickly see what’s on your desktop behind open windows:

  • On Windows 10, go to Taskbar settings and then turn on Use Peek to preview the desktop...
  • On Windows 11, go to Taskbar settings > Taskbar behaviors and check Select the far corner of the taskbar to show the desktop.

To view the desktop, simply move your mouse to the far-right edge of the taskbar.
