How to Zip and Unzip Files in Windows

Zipped (compressed) files take up less storage space and transfer more quickly than uncompressed files. In Windows, you work with zipped files just like regular files and folders. You can also combine multiple files into a single zipped folder for easier sharing.

How to Zip (Compress) a File or Folder

  1.  Locate the file or folder you want to zip.
  2. Right-click (or press and hold) the file or folder, select Send to, and then choose Compressed (zipped) folder.
  3. A new zipped folder with the same name will be created in the same location. To rename it, right-click (or press and hold) the folder, select Rename, and enter a new name.

How to Unzip (Extract) Files or Folders

  1. Locate the zipped folder you want to extract files from.
  2. Use one of the following methods:
  • To extract a single file or folder, open the zipped folder and drag the desired content to a new location.
  • To extract all the contents, right-click (or press and hold) the folder, select Extract All…, and then follow the prompts.

Notes:

  • To add files to an existing zipped folder, drag them into the folder.
  • Avoid zipping encrypted files, as they’ll be unencrypted upon extraction, potentially exposing sensitive information.
  • JPEG images are already highly compressed, so zipping multiple JPEGs won’t significantly reduce the total file size.
