Teams Chat vs Channel Posts
When using the Teams app, there are a couple options for sending messages – including file attachments – to other NU employees and students: Chat (1:1 or group) and Posts (within a Team Channel). Read on to learn more or review the options.
Direct Chats
Direct chats can be accessed through the chat module in the left navigation and allow you to communicate with an individual or a group of people. When you share a file in a chat, it is uploaded to your OneDrive and then shared with the others in the chat. If the file owner deletes it from their OneDrive or modifies the permissions, it will affect others in the chat.
- Naming a direct chat: When creating a chat with multiple participants, you can click to expand the options and add a group name.
- Replying to a specific message in your chat: For added clarity in one-on-one, group, and meeting chats, hover over the message you want to reply to, and choose More options (…) > Reply. The selected message will appear in the compose box. Type your reply and select Send.
Channel Posts
Channel posts are located within the Teams module in the left navigation and allow you to communicate with the other member of a Team. Attachments included in channel posts are stored in the Channel’s folder of the Team SharePoint site.
Topic-based messaging: Both the team and the channel have names and descriptions to provide an understanding of the type of conversations found within that channel. This way, channel posts are inherently organized by topic. For example, discussions in Marketing à Blogs should be related to blogs that the marketing team is working on.
Threaded channel post: Channel posts are threaded by default. You can either choose to start a new conversation or reply to an existing one. When you reply to a thread, the entire thread becomes the most recent discussion, rather than being based on when the original message was posted.
