Transform Emails into Tasks in Outlook
This Tech Tip walks through two options for converting an email into a task within Outlook’s T-Do Bar and the To Do app. The first method creates a temporary task associated with the email and is removed from your list when the email message is deleted. The second method allows you to effectively consolidate all relevant information such as text, phone numbers, and dates, and to set reminders.
Flag to Follow Up from the Inbox Folder:
- Hover over the email in your Inbox that you want to add to your to-do list.
- Click the flag icon in the upper-right corner of the message window to flag the email.
- For advanced options, right-click on the flag icon and select Add Reminder… to specify a Start date and a Due date for your task.
Drag-and-Drop Emails to Tasks:
Drag and drop an email message from the list into the Tasks list within the To-Do Bar. (Select Tasks from the View > Layout > To-Do Bar menu to show the tray.)
- Left-click and drag: Automatically creates a task with all email information.
- Right-click and drag: Offers three options:
- Copy Here as Task with Text: Creates a task with text only.
- Copy here as Task with Attachment: Generates a task with an attachment.
- Move here as Task with Attachment: Choose this option to retain the original email in your Inbox.
An effective strategy for boosting productivity and keeping your workspace organized is to sort through your Inbox by moving converted emails to different folders.
