Record Narration and Timings in PowerPoint

Important: The Record feature is only available in the PowerPoint desktop app. If you're using PowerPoint for the web, you can present using PowerPoint Live and record your session in Microsoft Teams instead.

Start Recording

  1. Open the slide where you want to begin recording.
  2. In the upper-right corner of the PowerPoint window, select Record.
  3. When you're ready, click the red Record button. Wait for the countdown, then begin speaking.
  4. To start from a specific slide, navigate to that slide first, then select Record.

Note: Narration is not captured during slide transitions. Pause your speech during the transition, then resume after the new slide appears.

Manage Your Recording

While recording, you can use the following controls:

  • Pause – temporarily stop the recording
  • Stop – end the recording session
  • Replay – preview the recorded narration
  • Pen, Highlighter, or Eraser – annotate your slides during recording

Remove Narration or Timings

An audio icon appears on a slide if narration is present.

To remove narration or timings:

  • In Record mode, select Clear
  • Choose one of the following:
    • Clear Recording on Current Slide – deletes narration and timings for the current slide
    • Clear Recording on All Slides – deletes narration and timings from the entire presentation

Save and Share Your Recording

When you're done recording:

  1. Go to File
  2. Choose Save or Export

The recorded narration and slide timings will automatically play when the presentation is opened.

Tip: Use Edit > Cameo to add a customizable camera feed to your slides. You can resize, move, and format it to complement your slide content.
